Like crowns, bridges are made in the laboratory
to mimic natural teeth. However they can be provided
even when there is no tooth present. The dentist
will prepare teeth on either side of the space
and fit the bridge across the existing teeth
and the gap between. A three unit bridge would
cover two teeth and the space in between them.
Once in place the patient is unaware of the bridge
and it functions like normal teeth.
Longer bridges are possible but the longer the
bridge the more difficult it can be to make sure
that it is not subject to mechanical forces that
might produce a see-saw effect as the patient chews
in different parts of the mouth.
